Resistance Band Training

According to USOE, students in 7th grade are required to acquire the knowledge needed to start proper weight training. In my experience in collegiate sports, physical training and obtaining various relating endorsements resistance bands are ideal for 7th grade students.

ELA students will be focused not on building bulk but to increase strength while, most importantly, learning the proper form needed to help strengthen their body. Each student will use resistance bands that will provide adequate resistance in order to push their body while learning specific exercises. Students will be focusing on their upper body and will learn a 3 day workout routine which will be documented in their PE Journal and done over the course of 2 weeks. Once the unit is complete students will have learned 12 exercise called the Big 12 and can be downloaded here or viewed in their PE Journal.

One more aspect to note: rather than focusing on specific muscle names (which is covered in 9th grade PE) the students will focus on the exercises and know which parts of their body are being worked through experience and feel. This is an ideal intro to strength training and I feel this can be extremely beneficial to the student as strength training becomes more of an interest.
